The Rum Regatta is the largest gathering of historic working sailing ships in the western Baltic and the unmissable event of Flensburg’s calendar. For one weekend in May, the harbour fills with traditional rigs, gaff schooners, and wooden cutters from across Northern Europe — many over 100 years old, all under sail.
The Race
The regatta takes its name from the historic rum cargo route between Flensburg and the Caribbean. The traditional first prize is, fittingly, a barrel of Flensburg rum. Three days of races run between the harbour and Holnis at the mouth of the firth.
Friday — Ship arrivals and harbour parade
Saturday — Main regatta day, two races
Sunday — Closing race and prize-giving
On Land
You don’t need to sail to enjoy the weekend. The Schiffbrücke promenade transforms into an open-air festival ground with:
- Maritime market — Over 120 stalls selling traditional crafts, smoked fish, and local rum
- Live music — Brass bands, sea shanty groups, and folk bands across three stages
- Open ship visits — Most participating vessels welcome visitors aboard between races
- Rum tastings — Pop-up bars from every active Flensburg rum house
Best Viewing Spots
- Schiffbrücke promenade — For the start and finish
- Volkspark hill — For an aerial view of the entire course
- Glücksburg shoreline — For the mid-race spectacle as ships round the buoy
Practical Tips
- Cost: Free entry to all land-based events; ship visits are free or by donation
- Accommodation: Book hotels 6+ months ahead — the city sells out completely
- Best day: Saturday for atmosphere; Sunday for prize-giving and quieter crowds
- Family-friendly: Yes, especially the Saturday market
- Weather: Bring layers — May winds on the firth are unpredictable
The Rum Regatta is the single best weekend to visit Flensburg. If you can plan your trip around any one event, make it this one.
