The Flensburger Weihnachtsmarkt runs for four weeks across Advent, transforming the historic Südermarkt and Holm into a maze of wooden chalets, candlelit stalls, and the warm hum of brass bands. It’s smaller than the famous Hamburg or Lübeck markets — and that’s exactly what makes it better.
What Sets Flensburg’s Market Apart
The Danish border is just seven kilometres away, and that proximity shapes everything. You’ll find traditional German Glühwein alongside Danish gløgg (subtly different — more cardamom, more raisins). The pastry stalls sell aebleskiver beside marzipan stollen. The crafts include both German woodwork and Scandinavian textile design. It’s the only Christmas market in Germany where you’ll regularly hear three languages — German, Danish, and Plattdeutsch — at neighbouring stalls.
The Layout
Südermarkt — The main square. Centred around a 10-metre Christmas tree, lined with food and drink chalets. The brass band stage is here.
Holm — The pedestrianised shopping street. Crafts, gifts, and seasonal homewares. Less food, more browsing.
Nordermarkt — Smaller, quieter, with a focus on artisan craft stalls and a children’s carousel.
Schiffbrücke — The harbour-front extension. Smaller selection of stalls but stunning at dusk with the harbour illuminations reflecting on the water.
Don’t Miss
- Gløgg at Stand 12 (Holm) — The unofficial best mug in town, made with proper Danish recipe
- Smoked fish from Foerde-Räucherei — Eel, mackerel, and salmon hot-smoked on site
- Marzipan from Niederegger (Lübeck-based but with a stall here) — The benchmark
- The brass band schedule — Free concerts on Südermarkt every weekday at 18:00 and 20:00
