Hafenfest is Flensburg’s biggest summer party — a one-day celebration of the harbour that draws over 80,000 visitors from Germany, Denmark, and the wider Baltic region. The entire Schiffbrücke promenade and harbour basin transform into an open-air festival ground from morning until midnight.
The Programme
11:00 — Opening Parade
A traditional sailing flotilla circles the inner harbour while the Flensburg Stadtkapelle (city brass band) plays from the quayside.
12:00 to 22:00 — Three Stages of Live Music
- Hauptbühne (Main Stage) at Schiffbrücke — German indie, regional rock, and one major touring headliner
- Folkbühne at the Museum Harbour — Sea shanties, folk, and Danish acoustic
- Jazz-Insel at Bohlwerk — Jazz, blues, and acoustic from afternoon to evening
Throughout the day
- 60+ food and drink stalls
- Artisan craft market with 90+ exhibitors
- Free harbour boat trips (45 minutes, hourly)
- Children’s area with maritime workshops
- Open visits to historic museum ships
22:30 — Fireworks Finale
A 20-minute fireworks display launched from a barge in the centre of the firth — the only night of the year fireworks are permitted on the harbour.
Best Spots to Watch the Fireworks
- Volkspark — Elevated and uncrowded
- Bohlwerk pier — Closest to the launch barge but very busy by 22:00
- Glücksburg shore — Quieter, distant view, with reflections on the water
- Solitüde Beach — A 25-minute walk from the harbour, distant view, near-empty
Practical Tips
- Cost: Free entry to everything; food and drinks at stall prices
- Cash: Bring cash — many smaller stalls don’t take cards
- Public transport: Extra buses run until 1am; trains to Hamburg run until midnight
- Accommodation: Hotels book solid 4-6 months ahead
- Family-friendly: Yes until 21:00; gets rowdier closer to fireworks
- Accessibility: Promenade is fully accessible; some stages have raised viewing platforms
Hafenfest is loud, busy, and brilliant. It’s the day Flensburg shows off — and proves that Germany’s northernmost city throws one of its best summer parties.
