Glücksburg Castle: The White Renaissance Fortress on the Fjord

Glücksburg Castle
Recommended Time
3-4 hours
Address
Schloss Glücksburg, 24960 Glücksburg, Germany

Glücksburg Castle is the easiest and most rewarding day trip from Flensburg — a perfectly preserved white Renaissance castle that rises from its own moat like something from a fairytale. It’s also one of the most historically significant buildings in Northern Europe: the seat of the House of Glücksburg, the royal house that today still occupies the thrones of Denmark, Norway, and the United Kingdom.

The History

Built between 1582 and 1587 by Duke Johann II of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg, the castle was constructed on the site of a former Cistercian monastery. The water surrounding it isn’t decorative — it’s the remains of the monastery fishponds, retained as a defensive moat. The castle’s most famous resident was King Frederik VII of Denmark, who died here in 1863. After his death, the throne passed to the House of Glücksburg, whose descendants today rule Denmark and Norway, and through Prince Philip’s line, sat on the British throne too.

What You’ll See Inside

The Royal Apartments — Restored to their 19th-century appearance, complete with original furniture, royal portraits, and Frederik VII’s deathbed room.

The Castle Chapel — A perfectly preserved Renaissance chapel with original 16th-century painted ceiling panels.

The Treasury — Royal silver, ceremonial weapons, and a small but exceptional collection of crown jewels.

The Garden — The Baroque gardens were redesigned in the 19th century but retain the geometric formal layout. Free to walk; the castle café serves lunch on the terrace.

Getting There from Flensburg

By bus: The 23 bus runs from Flensburg ZOB to Glücksburg every 30 minutes, journey time 35 minutes, €4.20 each way.

By car: 14 kilometres on the B199; free parking by the castle. 20-minute drive.

By bike: The 16 km coastal cycle route along the firth is the most scenic option — flat, well-paved, and entirely off-road for the second half.

Practical Tips

After the castle, walk 10 minutes to the Glücksburg fjord-side beach — quieter than the Flensburg town beaches and one of the loveliest spots on the firth.
